My ISP slows down p2p, newservers etc... help.

Hi there

Okay, I signed up for ADSL with an ISP that prioritises p2p and other non http traffic. So, right now, at 22:35 I'm only getting dl speeds of 2-3KB off a news server.
So, I'd like to know if there is anyway I can get, say, the protocol for newsreaders to use the http port.
I'm not too sure if that is the right explanation, but hopefully you know what I'm getting at...

Or perhaps a better way would be to use a proxy?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

hello and wellcome to LQ,

have you tried talking to your isp? and have you clarified that your isp is really applying a bandwidth limit on other protocols? ie. it could be the server side that has too many people loggin in, or has bandwith issues, which happens every once in a while.

if you have signed a contract with an isp you should have been informed about any bandwith limits and portscans. if not, you can contact them, to clear the issue, or move to a different isp.

you cannot just pipe anything down port 80. the server will not support that either.
plus if your isp has a layer 7 firewall it does not matter which port you try to run your traffic through, it will detect the type of traffic by inspecting the different packets and manage the traffic control that way.

try contacting a different news server, just to make sure it is your isp. talk to your isp and see if they can arrange something for you (that is probably one of the first steps for you)

I knew about the prioritising before I signed up.
It's just that I've gotten used to the new speeds while browsing so I wanted to see if I could get them for other stuff.
