Multiply Ethernet cable

Hi!

My Internet connection come to my room through an Ethernet cable. I have two computers and only one of them has wifi so, I cant share the connection via wifi.

I want both computers connected to Internet and there is no way of having another wire from the router. I guess I cannot duplicate the Ethernet cable like you can do RJ11, Can I?

How could I have Internet in both computers?

Cheers!!

You could install a switch (simplest) or you could connect one computer to your LAN via the other, by either:
  • connecting them with a ethernet (= Cat5, 5e or 6) cable -- which may need to be a crossover cable.
  • fitting WiFi to the one that doesn't have it.

Thank you catkin for your answer!

For connecting one to the network through the other, do I need two network cards?

I dont understand "(= Cat5, 5e or 6)" are they just version of rj45?

Yes -- two network cards.

RJ45 is the plug and socket while Cat5, 5e or 6 is the cable.

First of all your both computer have to have ethernet card.
Second, when you will be choosing SWITCH make sure that it has: Auto Detect Cabling (MDI/MDIX support) or just "support Auto MDI/MDI-X". With out this you will never get all work.
You will also need 2 ethernet cables, length choose your self.
After that you need to connect ethernet cable from router to port 1 of new switch, and one comp. to port 2 and another to port 3.

That is all.

Other possibility is to buy route/switch with wi-fi. So in that case second computer can use its wireless and ethernet.

Thank you very much for your answers :).

I will use a switch, it will be the cheapest and easiest thing I guess.
