Mullvad VPN Software. Safe to install?

I'm a complete computer newbie so please do excuse my ignorance.

I often log into a network which is very open and not particularly trustworthy which is why I was looking at using Mullvad's VPN service. It would appear to be simple to setup using their software provided, but I don't actually know how trustworthy it is. I've never installed anything other than from repositories, and this doesn't appear there so it's all a bit new to me.

I'm using a Debian based computer and they provide a .deb file. How would I know if it's safe to use, if it's secure and trustworthy?

Thanks

Is this a office net where you try to login remote to the server or a WLAN hotspot at the airport ?

Google for review top 10 vpn and you will easily find a good VPN. The VPN you mentioned resides in switzerland (the website) and as far as i see you get only 1 IP and it is shared. Compare the service quality. Try VPNs where you get a 7 day trial out so you can test if it is ok for ou.

I can't tell you if they are "trustworthy". But to go for sure try a major company like HideMyAss.

Thanks for the thoughts. It's for a variety of situations partly as they're untrusted networks in hospitals and universities and coffee shops too but also PRISM and GCHQ confirming pretty much what I suspected. I know I should just "shut up, stop asking questions and pay my taxes" as the government wants me to do, but it is all rather uncomfortable for paranoid, little old me.

It's the software itself that I'm more concerned about. I would like to use Mullvad's software, as it can stop the flow of data should the VPN connection be dropped, so the traffic doesn't just route itself directly through to the internet.

I wouldn't send anything through them I wouldn't mind them looking at, but what I am concerned about is letting them onto my computer if their software hasn't been checked out and confirmed as "Ok".

Thanks
