Does your school use a proxy server or is it that all clients get a dhcp address? Do you need to authenticate to the network to get shares and access?

Which browser? In Mozilla, for example, (since it sounds like you have a proxy server set up) you would go Edit --> Preferences --> Advanced --> Proxies --> Manual Proxy Configuration and then fill in the server and port details. Very similar to IE.

Under windows at work, I got Firefox to connect to the net by making my log on password (lan logon) and proxy server password the same. Have you tried that?
