MS VPN Server behind linux gateway

I need some information how to set up the packet forwarding to allow someone from internet to connect to my VPN server, running on windows xp professional but its behind a linux gateway.

Client - > Internet <-> [Linux gateway] <-> - Vpn Server

I have tried port forwarding various ports but this doesn't seem to work and is doing my head in. I am using iptables for masquerading already and I guess it's just a matter of knowing what ports vpn uses it uses and forwarding them or is there more??

Help appreciated.
