MRTG configuration issues !!! Urgent!!

Hi ..Iam trying to enable MRTG on my debian box (router/gateway) so that I can monitor the bandwidth usage. I do not want to opt for another solution untill Iam totally desperate with the configuration of MRTG.
My mrtg.cfg file is found at /etc/mrtg.cfg
My mrtg dir is at /var/www/mrtg
Ive installed everything needed through apt-get and now Ive been trying to configure it for an hour. Note, that i did not configure snmp ( do I have to do that and how ?)
I type the following command as root:

cfgmaker --global 'WorkDir: /var/www/mrtg' --global 'Options[_]: bits, growright' --output /etc/mrtg.cfg public@localhost

I get the following output:
--base: Walking ifSpeed
