mp3 batch convert, remote from command line

I'm starting a resource site that will allow people to upload wavs or mp3's. the problem is that the streaming method I am using requires mp3 format.

I tried to find a class or something to convert wavs to mp3's using PHP, but no luck. So I decided to just pile all of the wavs into a directory, then have a script batch convert all the wavs into mp3's, and then move the mp3's to a folder. Automated or not, it doesn't really matter.

I'm administering a RAQ3, remotely.

Any suggestions?

I'm not a newbie but definatly not an expert, so any details you could give would be greatly appreciated.

well you can easily use lame to encode the wavs to mp3. i can't remember the syntax off hand, but check the manpage and it should be quite straight forward. as for automation... the easiest way would be to set a daily or maybe hourly cron job to process all files in directory A, to mp3s in directory B and then delete all files in A. normally the simplest was to do this is to write a small script file and put it in /etc/cron.daily/ asnd leave it at that, however if you do not have that system set up you'll need a proper cron job, so you'll need to check the cron manpage too
