mounting windows shares freezes terminal...

When I use this command...
mount -t smbfs //fileserv/files /storage/files/
It asks for a password, when entered it seems as though it mounts. But when I try to list the folder contents the terminal freezes and Gnome slowly degrades. When I use the Gnome File Manager and browse to...
I can browse and see files just fine. Now, here's the real kicker. Every so often I am sucessful when using the above steps. What am I doing wrong and what can I use as a more permanent solution to mounting this share?

Thanks everyone

assuming you have a folder /storage/files/
(not in keeping with the file system standards man )
don't you want to put that folder in /mnt ??????? (only kidding)
but i think that extra directory branch should be owned by root and have permissions 755
then as root
mount -t smbfs -o username=xxx,password=xxx //fileserv/files /mnt/files
or /storage/files/ as the case may be
never seen this not work lots better than in file browser ????

yea, it was created as root and I tried to mount it the way you said at least twice. I just now downgraded to Fedora Core 1 since I have been hearing that FC2 is not exactly main stream yet. (Still in beta/development phase). After running all the updates I will try it again and see what the result is. Thanks
