mount problems

I am using the mount command to mount to windows filesystem (ntfs). Here is the command I have been using:
mount -t smbfs -o username=user,password=pass //server/folder /mnt/win

That command completes ok (I get another prompt). The problem is when I go do an 'ls' in that folder(/mnt/win/). It just sits and does nothing. I mean nothing.

Next, when I shut down the PC, it hangs while trying to unmount the filesystem. Linux will retry several times to unmount. I eventually have to hard boot the PC.

A little more info: I can map these drives from other windows boxes OK, and I could even map it from a fedora core 1 box that I had around here. I am using fedora core 2 on this system.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

greatly appreciated.

hi,

Check the version of the kernel. What i know is to map an NTFS drive one needs to have kernel-ntfs.rpm installed in the system. So check if it is there.

rabeea,
I can't post my core version because I don't have my laptop with me at the moment.

I can tell you that I have already installed that rpm to access the winXP partition on my laptop (which works fine).

Anyways, that RPM is for mounting an NTFS file systems using (as mount params):
-t ntfs

I am using (for samba share):
-t smbsf

which worked on core1 for me, so I am sure that it is the correct syntax.

Thanks for tyring. Do you have any other ideas?

you don't need to have ntfs module loaded in your kernel because you are accessing a network share not a partition on your hard drive. If you want to copy your file then why don't you use "smbclient" or "smbmount" these are much easier then the above command.

OK, well I was messing around with smbmount
Here is the syntax I used:

smbmount //server/share /mnt/win -o username=user

This asks for the password. I enter it, and get and error:

tree connect failed: ERRnosuchshare (You specified an invalid share name)

But, I am able to mount these shares from windows, and I was able to mount them on fedora core 1.

Does anyone know if core 2 has some problem with this?

check that the /mnt/win directory exists or not.
and have a look at share using

smbclient -L //server
and check that you are giving the right share name or not.
and try to access the share using

smbclient //server/share -U user
and if it works then mount the share.
