Dunno, but it seems you are one of a number (I'm another) having a devil of a time with samba. The common denominator seems to be we're all trying (unsuccessfully) to run it from RH9.
I wonder is there anyone who has it going on RH9????
I wonder if there's any one from RedHat willing to step up & tell us what's going on?
I'm not so sure myself... Personally, I blame only myself for not knowing even the basics of networking...
But it seems so much to read, and all I wanted was to exchange files with my win98 computer which was done by 5 clicks when this one was also a win98...
One thing about it you have nothing to lose by trying the last tutorial- I mean really when it comes to Linux if you have RH- MDK- or SuSE the RPM's normally work, second the therory is the same just that might be slight directory changes you need to pay attention too. Thirdly if you don't try you stay where you are..
And that would be like the Texas Rangers-opps STRANGERS.
Good Luck,
You should be able to see the linux PC in network neighboorhood but it might take awhile for windows to update. If it doesn't try using the find computer on the start menu or in a DOS prompt box try the command,
net view
The user you added to smbpasswd should be the same as the username you log on to with windows. You should be able to see the home directory of the username when you click on the linux box in network neighboorhood. You can drag and drop files or use windows explorer to connect the drive.
As a side note you need to change the startup script to add configuring the eth0:1
Hi again! I'm back from the country where I was spending midsummers...
I tried to do everything as you said, and it won't work!!!
If I run
ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
it gives me an error message, which I will try to translate into english:
SIOCSIFADDR: File exists
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address
SIOCSIFNETMASK: Cannot assign requested address
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Cannot assign requested address
however, nmbd and smbd started up smoothly, so I figured everything would be ok, but the computers won't find each other, and I can't ping between them... what to do?
[test]
comment = Test share
path = /tmp
writeable = yes
guest ok = yes
if you are wondering why I have guest account set to root, it is so that any computer connecting to me gets full root access...
I'm not going to connect this to a larger network, I only want to be able to exchange files easily between my two computers...
