Monitoring Traffic From Tap

Hi All,

I am creating a hardware tap as shown here:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Make...p6/Third-jack/

And I want some advise as to what I can use to monitor how much data each IP address is using per day/week/month/year. And also be able to see the current throughput rate and maybe even by which protocols? Perhaps use ipfire or smoothwall and somehow route to a virtual interface which is /dev/null?

Has anyone any ideas or know of any OpenSource software which can easily do this?

Well, you have lots of options.

Wireshark is one of the more popular graphical packet capture programs.

Tcpdump is its command line equivalent. Cacti is a popular graphing solution for bandwidth usage.

I've used lots of open source analyzers, but my favorite, (free), software is Colasoft Capsa.
