Monitoring ipsec

Hello!

I would like to monitor ipsec connections, but the connections are going down, if no traffic passes throu the tunnel.

1.) How can i avoid the connection be closed so that i can use ipsec status ? DPD is not the thing!
2.) Any better idea than pinging for monitoring the vpn connection ?

Thanks for any idea !
