In your /etc/modules.conf (/etc/conf.modules in some distros), does the line "alias eth0 via-rhine" exist? If not, add it and reboot.
Also, give us a few more specifics:
1. What distro are you using?
2. What model of NIC?
3. Do you need to use DHCP, or have you been assigned a static IP address?

perhaps it's just me, but what do you mean by "load"? Can you do a dump of your /etc/modules.conf?
Assume:
1. your nic is aliased to eth0
2. when you say "after boot" you mean you are ifup'ing it (/sbin/ifup eth0).
Then:
Check your ifcfg-* file
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
Make sure ONBOOT=yes

soory for the language, when lilo boots it fails to insert the via-rhine module. My ifcnf-eth0 has
the onboot=yes. I'm really new at this excuse me but I don't know what you mean "dump".

I believe what ektoric meant was- can you post the contents of your /etc/moules.conf file here.
At bootup, what messages do you get that indicate a failure in eth0's initialization? I don't have to deal with PPPoE, but is has caused problems for many users; try the Forum Search, using "PPoE" as the keyword.
At the risk of posting these much too often, try my suggestions in : this thread

here's my modules.conf file, sorry for the delay
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias eth0 via-rhine
options via-rhine io=0x9800
the message that i see when i boot is something like"bringing up interface eth0, insmod via-rhine failed, delaying eth0, failed" sorry it's not exact but it goes by fast, is there any where for me to read my boot messages? I tried DMR's thread but i've allready done that before I posted this. thank you

The card is a PCI card so you do not need to tell Linux what io to use. PCI probing will tell it. (In other words, take out that "options" line.)
"I can isert it after boot and everthing works fine, is there any reason for this?"
What are you doing to get it to work?
