Modifying NIC setting using ethtool in openSUSE 12.1


hi guys im trying to change the Port & Transceiver settings using ethtool but its not taking effect.
no errors were received. what could be the problem.

Code:
Settings for eth1:
        Supported ports: [ TP ]
        Supported link modes:   
        Supports auto-negotiation: No
        Advertised link modes:  Not reported
        Advertised auto-negotiation: No
        Speed: 1000Mb/s
        Duplex: Full
        Port: Twisted Pair
        PHYAD: 1
        Transceiver: external
        Auto-negotiation: off
        Supports Wake-on: g
        Wake-on: d
        Link detected: yes

Did some testing... i think this is not possible on virtualbox
