Smile modem sharing with xp

I have been sharing a modem on my linux pc with win 98 boxes no problem. I use modemd on the linux box as in the modem sharing howto and some s/w dialout-ip on win98 has worked ok for a couple of years.
Trying win xp with the same setup can just abouit get the modem to dial but not able login to net.
There is some s/w mserver I have tried but not managed to get working.
Any idears anyone?
