Modem hangup after data transfer

I have the following problem with a 56K external modem (actually tried more of them, with the same results):

After making the connection to my ISP with KPPP or wvdial and browsing (with Mozilla or Konqueror, no difference in behavior) for a certain amount of time (which varies from a few seconds to a few minutes), I receive ppp error 16 telling "the pppd daemon died unexpectedly".
It seems from the logs that the other side disconnects because of protocol problems.
I'm doing all this with root account. Tried with Mandrake 9.1, Knoppix 3.2, Red Hat 9.0 and SuSE 8.2 - the same happens. Tried on 3 different PCs - the same.
If no data is transferred, disconnection does not happen.

Here's what the log says:

Hi Il Phenomeno!!

I'm a big fan of you. I hope you will free yourself from the fear of being injured again and run like before. I see you on TV and i'm sure you have fully recovered all your potential.
Ok i'm with you

Let's talk about your post.
I'm also a newbie...
Here is my suggestions nevertheless
In your case i would check if my modem is perfectly supported by linux somewhere on the net archives.
What driver do you use?
Try to obtain the latest one for your material either open source or firmware
Because sometimes drivers present on distibutions packages are old versions
Make an investigation
If you found several drivers try them all to see what happen and tell me

See you Ciao

The problem has been solved: it was the ISP's fault. Changing ISP was the solution.

IMHO no driver is needed for external serial modems. That's why they should
always work with Linux.
