modem error codes in linux?

in windows when a connection terminates, we see an error describing what happened. for example, error 678 I think tells us the remote computer did not respond, or other errors...

But in linux, (for me Ubuntu) I can't understand why a connection terminates. If username/password is wrong or something else...?

the "plog" just says connection terminated, and no reason!

this caused me some problems, when I call my ISP and when he asks me about the error number, I tell him I use linux and I don't know what the error is..!

Any way to find why a connection terminates?
Thanks

emmm...both ADSL and Dial-up...

hi

for a dial up modem I suggest you have a look at ...wvdial...if errors it tends to say what they are rather than numbers

I have used it for usb modem (dial up) so it should work for uhhhhemm adsl and dial up?
