Angry modem connection hangs

Please help me i'm begging you....

Is there anbody who can tell me, why my connection hangs when I log on my linux box as a normal user..

My modem connection is ok when I log on as ROOT it doesn't hang and it downloads with maximum speed.. better that my windowz.

But when I log on as a normal user, something kicks in, that makes the connection hang. I don't know if it is file premissions, or if it is the firewall.. or just a simple bug. Hope some of you PRO LINUX NETWORK GUYS would like to help me out

I'm using

RH 8.0
Gnome

ppp with wvdial

It's probably some permissions problem

put this line in /etc/ppp/options

Code:
debug
then run this in an xterm while trying to connect

Code:
tail -f /var/log/messages
check for errors that may describe the problem

Ok I was looking for errors, and comparing what happend when I logged on the internet as ROOT and as normal user. The only errors I got as normal user was this..

"modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-21"

as ROOT I got the same error and also this error

"modprobe: Can't locate module ppp0"

At on time I connected as normal user, there was a messages saying something like "DNS nameserver 212.242.40.3 kicked though firewall".. I have only seen this message ones, and only as a normal user, never as ROOT.

Oh just so you know, both ROOT and normal user are connecting. The only problem is, that sufing and dowloading as ROOT, is much faster than normal user.

If I connect as normal user, Log out and Log in as ROOT, while the connection is still on something changes. ROOT connection runs max again...

Another thing I noticed when I connected as normal user, was the amount of "RX errors" when i ran "ifconfig" .It was always high.. while ROOT always is 0... that made me think that "Hardware flow control" was't activatet as normal user..

Really hope you can help me out there... or else I will surf as root forever, can't live with the bad connection as normal user..

Thumbs down Kppp tried same problem

Sorry for the hand down... but KPPP didn't do the trick..

One thing though.. I have a feeling that it has something to do with hardware flow control.. why bacause it acts like when hardware flow control is not on..
and when I run ifconfig it says that PPP RX has almost the same errors as packets..

Any one has an idea what to look for in this case ????

Also does anyone know where i can setup firewall settings for PPP... if there is any that is

Please respond quick I want to nail this sucker

Hmmm.. no

What ever it was supposed to do it didn't help.. dran.. but thanks anyway

Oh what was it supposed to do, pleas be as technical as possible.. no joke. really want to know the what's going on when I type chmod +s, couldn't find that switch in chmod --help...

Is ther anyone who could help me with the questions, about the firewall and how it affects PPP.. and also, how I can check, that hardware flow control, really is kicking in when I use my normal acount.

Again.. this sucker is mine, want him dead and gone..

Thanks for the help
