can you ping from one machine to the other?
are the nics up and running properly?
have you tested the cable?
are you running any firewalls?
what steps have you taken to configure this, and what things have you checked already?

<edit>michaelk beats PEACEDOG to the punch. i don't mind taking one for the team </edit>

I cannot ping either computer from the other, but I know the cable is working because the network works when both computers are running WinMe- the mandrake machine is dual boot.

x cable

to start with.
us a crossed network cable (not a regular) if you plugged your boxes directly, makes a different. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...readid=198413#
be sure both ip addresses are different. (xp will make a notice.)
If you use a router, be sure you dont have got the mandrake webserver on > it also uses ip 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or whatever our gateway is. So no webserver if gateway has the same ip.

now you can ping at least.
if not:
can you ping yourself? iaw does your card work?

etc etc etchttp://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/newreply.php?s=&action=newreply&threadid=198413#

what does ifconfig return from mandrake? if you don't understand, try opening a terminal, or konsole, it's the tv icon w/a seashell in the lower corner. that should bring up a window that resembles a dos prompt. in that window type /sbin/ifconfig, then copy and paste the results here. you may also want to paste the results of the following commands

/sbin/lspci -v

lsmod

hope that helps.
good luck.
