Mapping ~ in Windows 98

I have Samba set up on my computer to let people map a drive to a folder on my computer. This works fine, but I would also like to map my home directories. When I type \\computername\user, it says that it is there on the network, but it asks me for a password. I type in the password of the owner of the home directory, but it says the password is wrong. What do I do? This is my smb.conf file:
Code:
[global]
        dns proxy = No
        log file = /var/log/samba.%m
        netbios name = computername
        server string = Samba Server
        os level = 20
        encrypt passwords = yes
        security = share
        ssl ca certdir = /etc/ssl/certs
        max log size = 50

[homes]
        comment = Home Directories
        read only = No
        browseable = No
[share]
        map archive = no
        wide links = no
        writeable = yes
        path = /mnt/stuff
        force group = nobody
        force create mode = 444
        create mode = 444
        force user = nobody
        public = yes
        short preserve case = no
        directory mode = 444
Edit: typo

It could be a password encryption issue -- In order to get Win98 to mount my network shares I have to disable encryption in samba and also have Win98 send the user name and password in plain text by making a registry change. But this was about a year ago -- so samba may handle the encryption better now.

I can mount samba shares from a win98 box without turning off password encryption.

You can use password encryption with Samba and windows.
However, if I remember correctly, you will have to patch windows first. You can do this via windowsupdate.

Also, you may need to specify the password program and a password chat in the [global] share
This is what I have on my RedHat machine.
Code:
security = user
passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u
passwd chat = *New*password* %n\n *Retype*new*password* %n\n *passwd:*all*authentication*tokens*updated*successfully*
In your [homes] share, add the following
Code:
valid users = %S

Is there something in the start menu that says logoff user?

Sounds pretty stupid I know but it depends on your settings. If your not logged in it will not send the username correctly or something dumb like that. Anyway try logoff and then you will get a login screen. log in and try it.
