Hi all, i'll be blunt. i am a n00b at Linux, the only reason i installed it is because my programming class uses UNIX systems so i'm forced to use Linux as a result. My problem is this, i have drivers installed for my 3Com NIC card which is integrated with my ASUS P4C800 motherboard. I followed the installation instructions on the readme file, i typed "make load" to compile the source codes for the driver, i loaded the drivers and finally, i typed "ifconfig eth0 up". Then i went to the internet connection setup thing and got connect to the net and i was happy. The problem occurs when i reboot my computer and back into Linux again, the drivers failed to load, something about the device cannot be found during the check listing thing. As of right now, i have to type "ifconfig eth0 up" everytime i reboot in order to initialize my drivers.. sometimes i even have to type "insmod 3c2000.o" before the ifconfig thing. This is just plain annoying, is there like an "autorun" thing like they have in WinXP? Another problem, the default internet browser for Linux is Mozilla, i upgraded it to the latest version. For some reason, i cannot access google.com because it times out, and many other sites. I couldn't even post on this forum using Mozilla on Linux (i'm in WinXP right now). I also have Radeon 9800 All-In-Wonder that isn't working properly in Linux because i don't have the right drivers, and i dunno how to install drivers for it i heard it's very complicated.. argh! after installing and using Linux, i can see why it still can't go mainstream =\.. yah this seems like a long post but i'm sure some Linux guru can answer all of them thank you all!
Each distro has a different way of configuring network devices. Please post what distro you use. If it is Red Hat, for example, you should post your question in the Red Hat forum.
Regarding your problem with Mozillia, I had a similar problem with Knoppix on a box with 2 NICs. I ran netstat in a terminal window as Mozilla was unsuccessfully trying to connect to google.com and slashdot.org. netstat showed mozilla trying to connect via the non-internet facing NIC. I disabled that NIC and have never encountered that problem since.
Strangely, on my Slackware box (also with 2 NICs), I've never had that problem. I probably had misconfigured the network setup on Knoppix, but since I really didn't need that second NIC anyway, I just removed it.
From what I recall of Red Hat, if you want to avoid the GUI tool, you need to edit the ifcfg-eth0 script under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. You also need to edit the /etc/resolv.conf to add your DNS servers
I don't know anything about the ATI Radeon drivers; try searching this site, there are a lot of posts on this subject.
