Exclamation mandriva server not responding

inatalled mandiva free on dell optiplex 95o mhz, 256mb following the perfect installation.want clients to connect n share net connection , to that end threw in bind,squidn shorewall.config went o.k, but clients cannot connect to it much less ping.and eth1 which is set to boot at start up always loses its ip address whenever i ifconfig. has anyone got similar probs with mandriva coz im thinkin of jumpin ship to fc4 as the moment.
