mandrake 9.2 & XPpro network problem
Hi !
I've got a problem with making a network between a mandrake 9.2 and a win XPpro. in fact i have a computer with mandrake and another XP pro and the network works between the 2 XP. On the mandrake I can ping 127.0.0.1 and my own IP (192.168.0.1), but i can't ping xp (IP 192.168.0.2) ; ifconfig says nothing's wrong, but 'ping 192.168.0.2' returns "Destination host unreachable"... there's no firewall activated I've looked in others forums, but I didn't find the solution... PLEASE HELP ME !!! |
What are you using to connect all of these PCs together?
Are all of the link lights illuminated? |
I use an ethernet network
link lights are not illuminated (I think, but now I'm at school so I'm not sure...) |

sorry, I didn't understand
my PCs don't use a hub, a switch..., they only are linked with a cross cable (it's only to share some files, and maybe the mandrake's internet connection) |
The link light should be illuminated.
Verify the cable is actually inserted into the ethernet devices. Verify the configuration of the ethernet card i.e. are the same i.e. 10 or 100MB & full or half duplex. The command line linux utility is mii-tool. |
the cable is well inserted, the 2 cards are 10/100Mb
the network works with the 2 XP, but not with mandrake & XP  |
When i boot linux, i get this :
eth0 activation [FAILED] |
On the mandrake I can ping 127.0.0.1 and my own IP (192.168.0.1), but i can't ping xp (IP 192.168.0.2) ; ifconfig says nothing's wrong, but 'ping 192.168.0.2' returns "Destination host unreachable"
the ip 127.0.0.1 on mandrake is the local loopback addy of ur mandrake machine so u r only pinging mandrake from mandrake. To start at the beginning all 3 machines need addys so if winxp (1) is 192.168.0.1 winxp(2) is 192.168.0.2 then mandrake can be 192.168.0.3 all 3 machines will have the subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 Or if u r just networking xp to mandrake then 192.168.0.1 for xp and 192.168.0.2 for mandrake. Run the ICS wizard on xp (only) and this will assign the address for that machine for u. So now u need to get your NIC in your mandrake machine working so u can activate it with the correct addy inserted in your network config. In the bios do u have pnp set to yes? When the machine boots does it find ur ethernet card? Try dealing with these things first and if u have no success then we can take it from there. |
I have only 2 machines : one with XP and Mandrake, and the other with only XP
but I'll try to do what you said, and tomorrow I'll tell you what it did... |
