Mandrake 9.1 NIS and Samba Help

Greetings All - I'm a fairly new to Linux, (have a reasonable concept of the basics and have done some simple administration) with links to tons of user manuals - I just need a shove in the right direction.

I am interested in learning how to set up a linux file and print server which will allow some windows boxes to connect to it. After browsing through the forums it appears I am bound to run into many obstacles - but i'm ready for the challenge.

I have a box with mandrake 9.1 installed - it was given to me that way - i'm actually hoping to do a fresh installation myself once i get the disks - cause i'd prefer to install it with the GUI - right now it's all command line. anyway, it is my understanding that I will need to first get NIS up and running and then Samba.

I understand that I will need to install ypserve - and found many links to download sites where i can aquire this - my first question will then be :

Which version of ypserv is the most stable for mandrake 9.1???

I look forward to your help and getting better aquainted with the users of the forums.

Thank you.

I was getting ready to say that ypserve was on your CD... but you don't have the disk. I would stick with the Mandrake-9.1 version.

Just download yp* from this location.

Thankx for the link. Yeah - if I had the CD I wouldn't have to be hunting.
I am going to download yp* and give it a go. Will probably need help along the way.

I have downloaded ypserv-2.8 , yp-tools2.8 and yp-bind1.12 from http://mandrake.dsi.internet2.edu/Ma...Mandrake/RPMS/

and following the instructions for setting up NIS server from
http://www.linux-nis.org/nis-howto/HOWTO/ypserv.html

I installed the RPM for ypserv and yp-tools and am able to access
/var/yp/Makefile . I have left it all at the default settings.
then the instructions say to edit /var/yp/securenets (which i can not find) and /etc/ypserve.conf (which i can find - not too sure about making changes to these files just yet)

Then it says

Make sure the portmapper (portmap(8)) is running, and start the server ypserv. The command

% rpcinfo -u localhost ypserv

How do i make sure the portmapper is running?????

when i type

rpcinfo -u localhost ypserv

i get the message

rpcinfo : rpc : program not registered
program 1000004 is not registered

PLEASE HELP??????
