Mandrake 10 - slow webpages
I won't pretend to know anything in details as to regards of linux, I played around with it as most but after Mandrake 9.2 i've decided to take the plunge & install Mandrake 10 community which I downloaded (3 ISO) - Installation went great but the problem I have is the Internet... I setup the Broadcom 4400 adapter Under 'configure computer' > 'network & Internet' > 'New Connection' > 'Lan Connection' > selected network adapter etc & proceeded to loadup both of the browsers which come as default with this version of Linux. First thing I notice was the SLOW speed of the webpages loading, even for the likes of GOOGLE which normal is instantaneous, I have a 1mb ADSL connection supplied by BTYahoo. Under windows XP it's fast as hell! I updated Mandrake community 10 using its own updates etc & it was downloading at 120kb per second which is what I would normally get. But its the webpages that are so slow, here is my system:
Netgear DG834G - 54mbps Wireless network router - With NAT AMD 2600 1GIG - DDR 3200 120GB HDD (PRIMARY) 80GB HDD (Secondary, however took it out for installation of this & not put back) 8x DVD +/- RW 16x Slot loading DVD 18.1" TFT - Compaq 1825 64mb Ti500 Hercules - Display adapter Asus Motherboard - with built in Broadcom ethernet 10/100 Hope this information is sufficient for you guys/gals to help me with my problem. The router is set to 1450MTU Which works on my computers connected via WIRELESS & worked fantastically under windows XP. Thanks for your help in advance, & any replies could you remember im an idiot when it comes to linux so please dont be too technical. Sorry for my ignorance, just starting with linux again. Thanks |
Strange problem you got there. Could you say what browsers you are using? I am a Fedora guy, so I don't know which browsers are default on MDK?
One thing you could try though. Maybe it is a port thing. Tell me, is FTP downloading slow as well? Try to download a file from some ftp and post what speed you get there. Try this for instance. http://um-sd06-210-1.uni-mb.si/try.zip and ftp://um-sd06-210-1.uni-mb.si/pub/try.zip Compare speeds and tell me what you get. They are identical files (3,6 MB). |
I am having the same problem under Mandrake Community 10.0...
I've noticed that ftp downloads at my normal speed, around 300 to 400kps...where http sites load at a snail's pace... It loads slowly on both the Konquerer web browser and Mozilla Firefox...so it doesn't seem to be a browser problem... |
Alright, I seemed to have fixed my problem...
I opened up my /etc/resolv.conf file and found that some various IP addresses for nameservers...but they were different from the ones that I typically use in windows, so I added the two that I've used for years and now I'm browsing at my normal speed. Hopefully you can do the same to solve your problem. |

Thanks...
Thanks for your replies, I downloaded Opera web browser & it fixed it instantly... However the other two are still slow!
:D |
I seem to have resolved this issue deleting any server names in "resolv.conf". It now looks like this
search tiscali.be nameserver 62.235.14.4 # ppp temp entry nameserver 62.235.13.199 # ppp temp entry At first, I did not get my ADSL to connect, like many other people running Mandrake, it seems. Suddenly, it started to work, albeit very slow (slow look-up). Unfortunately, I do not remember anymore what settings I filled in in Mandrake Control Center, and there seems no obvious way to see all settings. If tomorrow my system breaks, I can start all over again. Anyone can help me indicating how I can inspect these settings, be it graphical or by peeking at a configuration file? Anyway, this thread helped me to resolve my speed problem. Many thanks! |
I had the same problem. My system, Dell 8300, wired to port on a Truemobile 2300 wireless router, MDK 10.0 OE, 3.5Mbps cable. Mozilla (1.6) and Konquerer were pathetically slow. But Opera was faaast. Ftp was blazing. After poking around some sites, I found that the slow browsing could be due the auto enabling of IPv6. (default on FC2).
Added the following line to my /etc/modprobe.conf alias net-pf-10 off Results: Mozilla is now very fast, Opera is super fast and I've given up on Konquerer. |
