Mandrake 10 Help With Client/Server Setup
Hey everyone, I am a student and am new to Linux. I am in a group of 3 other people and we are trying to setup a server and client. We are running Mandrake 10 on two machines. One has a server installed the other a client.

We have the two computers connected into a Bay Networks hub that is connected to the internet. Both computers are able to access the internet, but we need functionality as a client/server. What software is out there to connect the two and make them interact as a client/server? For example Novell but for Linux and Open source. Any help would be appreciated.

It depends on the on what you specificlly want to do. For example if you just wanted to do simple file sharing then you would run NFS. edit your exports file to share out the directories that you want to (i.e. /Shared_Directory) then you would mount this share directory on the other computer with

Computer_Name://Shared_Directory /Directory_to_Mount_to_on_local_Machine

Of course this is all command line and file editing. I am not familar with Mandrake 10 but I will assume you boot up in graphic mode and and directly into Xwindows and probally usijng the KDE environment. In which case there should be several tools for you to use graphically to get done what you want. I would suggest getting a good linux book or looking into the man pages.

I missed a part on the exports fille it should read like this

/Shared_Directory (rw)
/Shared_Directory (r)

the earlier one gives read and write permissions were as the later one gives just read permissions.

also you can limit the share to just an IP address also like this
/Shared_Directory (r)
/Shared_Directory (rw)
/Shared_Directory (noaccess)

Hope this shows you some ideas
