Mandrake 10 crashes when network freezes

Hi there,

I have two Mandrake 10 machines and 2 Win XP machines on a 8 port switch along with my DSL modem (Alcaltel Speed Touch Pro) and a wireless AP. The DSL modem is acting as the DHCP server.

My DLINK switch that i just bought freezes at least once every day and requires a powerdown to start moving packets again. (This is the second one I have tried of the brand and they both did it. Taking it back soon for a different brand)

Here is my problem though. When i reset the switch my linux boxes will not see the network but the XP machines will start again quite happily. If I restart the networking in linux with

service network restart

the services stop and restart and linux freezes instantly. the mouse wont move and all kb commands are ignored.

Is there a better way to force linux to pick up an IP address again? Why does it loose the IP in the first place. I was under the impression the addresses had a lease time that they would hold the address for?

Any suggestions other than a linux reboot would be appreciated

Thanks

Ashley

Hi,
Well, i have been using mandrake 9.1 for a while now as server but it has not been loosing ip address. It is working ok. I tried the mandrake 10 community edition, it browsed well but what i can not do was to share internet connection with it. In fact, I did not even find where the option for setting it is located. One funnny part of the mandrake 10 is that every little thing has its own environment which makes it a little tedious to work with.

Coming to the freezing of your Dlink switch, did you connect your wireless AP to it. If you did that is what is causing it to freeze. I have two Dlink switches which i use. I notice that each time i connect my wireless base radio to it directly it often freeze, so what i did was to uplink to another Linksys, then connect the wireless AP to it.

another thing to check in the issue of loosing ip is your network card. What is the make? Why I am saying this, is because i have not notice mandrake loosing ip after rebooting before since ever i have been using it.

thanks

Don
