Mandrake 10 and DSL; Can Ping but not browse

I just installed Mandrake 10, and tried opening a browser but it just hung, so I tried pinging outside sites, google, yahoo, my college website, etc... and all came back fine. after I was done with the pings I opened the browser again, and tried the same sites, and they all came up fine. But no other sites would work. so I thought my DNS settings were off, but after setting them to what my DSL router said they should be its still no better.

I can ping anywhere, can browse my LAN, but the browser can't resolve any names on its own. typing ip-addresses into the browser seems to also work.

I have an Actiontec GT701, apparently not a good thing for linux users.

I have tried the non-windows setup option on the Actiontec setup browser, but the router can never establish an internet connection after I finish with it., ie the internet light never turns from blank to green.
I have everything set to DHCP, and PPoA, which is what my ISP says to use. I'm starting to get a bit frustrated, so any help/suggestions would be greatly welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Which browser are you using? Have you tried more than one?

What error do you actually get from the browser? Is it connection refused or unable to resolve?

You need to go to 192.168.0.1 and run the basic or advanced setup. Enter the user name and password that came on a sheet of paper (this is the ISP / MSN user name and password) not the email account user name and password. The modem should go offline and power up again and all should be well. You may have to power down the modem too as I noticed that the internet light didn't come back on after I saved my setting on the admin page. If you hit the reset button on the back you'll need to enter the user name and pass again I think. Hope this helps - I still can't get it to work on fedora core 2 but it works on XP ouch!

(you have the filters on the phones right?) Perhaps this post may help ...

........the only difference is you may have to set your local ip address statically in which case you'd need to get the dns server addresses which are available at »www.qwest.net/nav4/acct_tools/basic_ro..
if you were to set your local ip statically you want it to be something like 192.168.0.2 and your default gateway should be 192.168.0.1 (assuming you've got an actiontec). but i'd only do that if there's no option to set that stuff dynamically.

sorry about being gone for so long, I had to go out of town. I'm trying things out with bot Konqurer and Mozilla. The error I get when trying to reach a website,if I havn't pined it, is your standard timeout error

I tried going through all the setups availible, and the internet light came up, but I still was unable to get to a website without pinging it first. I think there is somethingwrong with the Mandrake setup but I don't know what.

anyone have any other ideas??

thanks for the ideas offered.

same problem

I'm having more-or-less the same problem, although I'll get totally intermittent access with no rhyme or reason (i.e., go to one website and it works, try another one at the same time, no dice, only to change again within a minute or two).

Just fyi, I have dsl with suse 9.0 with an actiontec GT701-wg and have the same problem . I can see some web pages and not others and even the one's i see are really slow. This seems to be a problem with the modem. There are a lot of forums about this and some people have been able to get there's to work but have not done a good job saying how. I can duel boot to XP and all is well. I'm new to linux so won't be much help but if i find something will let you know.

I actually got my dsl connection to work in Mandrake. I had to manually change the the DNS server addresses to the ones set in the DSL router config page. Apparently Mandrake only picks up the first ip-address in the file because the second one was a set to the DSL's DNS, but the internet still wouldn't run.

I then tried installing Suse 9.0 and configuring. I was comparing OS's. For me it was a little confusing because SUSe didn't detect a DSL connection, so I tried setting up my own and that didn't work, and I tried some more things, but it turns out that not detecting the DSL connection was the correct thing to do. once I deleted the connection I created, the internet worked fine. I'd suggest making sure your DNS server addresses are set to the ones you can fine in the routers config website, and going from there.

ok guys i just installed linux and am getting to know it quite well pretty quickly coming from windows, anyways im using the gt701 on SuSe 9.1 and i was having the same problem , but i changed my name server to first instead of 192.168.0.1, so anyways heres how u should have it setup , you DO NOT need to setup a dsl connection using ethernet

ok so go to the Start button (i havent figured out the name yet but its the big green button)
and go to system and click YaST , go to network devices(make sure u dont have a dsl connection setup) , click network card , select your network card and if its not in the list but it is detected and in the already configured list just select it and click change then select it again and click edit and edit it as i have below:

I am assuming you are using Qwest dsl , and also you might not use the same DNS servers as these so just go to 192.168.0.1 in your browser and go to status and use the DNS servers listed and replace the ones i have listed below ( DNS server called Name Server in SuSE)

Name server 1: 205.171.3.65 Domain Search 1: Site
Name Server 2: 192.168.0.1 Domain Server 2:
Name Server 3: 205.171.2.65 Domain Server 3:

set the default gateway to 192.168.0.1

Static IP address 192.168.0.x Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0

and there ya go i just saved the settings and got a connection!!! so now im off to explore the world of linux, just had to let ya know in a little more detail how to do it
