Managing Router From Web

This is my first post on LQ, although I have used the website before as a Guest.

I was hoping someone here could offer me some assistance or get me started in the right direction for managing data on my router without having to log in.

More specifically, I know how to edit the MAC address allow list from logging into my router via the web (192.168.1.1 and selecting options, etc), but I would like to be able to do it without having to log in.

I want to create a front end for my router where my roomates can add their MAC address from a webpage rather than me having to login to the router and do it. I know it may not be the most practical thing in my situation, but it would make for an interesting project. I would like to design a webpage that they can visit, my PHP script would detect their MAC address, and then the user would click a Submit button to add their MAC address to the allow list on the router.

I am not all that concerned about security at the moment, so don't keep that at the front of your head.

Thanks a lot if you can offer me any assistance!

Are your roomates computers directly connected to your router?

They won't be directly connected, rather connected via wireless. It's a wireless router, and I want them to be able to get to a webpage (obviously not via my wireless network yet), hit submit, and their MAC address is automatically added to the allow list.

Again, it isn't really a necessity, but I think it would be a fun PHP project for me, as I am trying to learn the language. I also think it could be a good way to learn a bit more about the backbone of routers.

Thanks for the reply Centinul, I look forward to another.

How are they going to get to a wireless webpage on your router if they aren't connected to the router yet?

It would be from a wired connection.

Do you know how to do anything of this sort? Do you know of a way to access the router's data, or a place where I could figure out how to do it? I know about the semantics, I just want to know if it's possible or not.

I'm really not sure if it is possible or not. Have you thought of setting up a hotspot with your router? This may get you the requirements that you need... Additionally, depending on your type of router there might be 3rd party firmware in existence.

The mac address is visible to anyone monitoring your traffic. Mac address filtering does not supply any protection. Use wpa encryption instead.

Typically MAC filtering is done in conjunction with WPA encryption.

Yes, it is possible to change a router's configuration via an application.
Just A couple of examples:
The CD (a windows app) that comes with a linksys router can change its configuration.

Slingbox (remote TV over the internet) configuration utility adds the IP address/UDP port of the box to the port fowarding page. It even asks for the router's password.

Haven't thought about the details but it does answer the question.
