makeing a music server
 

i just wanted to kno if any one can tell me a fairly detaled way to make my linux computer (redhat 9.0 with gnome grafix) a server to just play music of from my windows computer........i can easly send the files to the linux computer and store them there but i dont know how to create it into stricly a music server any help??:confused:

Well there are a couple of things you could do. First what way do you want to serve the music? Streaming? One song at a time?

You can set it up basically three ways that I can think of.

1)set up a samba server and use a shared folder on the samba server, for playing and uploading songs to and from.

2)set up a web server, and use samba, or an ftp server to upload music to the music folder on the webserver.

3)Streaming music, use a streaming server like Icecast, and use ftp or samba to upload to the streaming directory, you can also have multiple directories, for genres for example.

i decided that i want to stream them but i cant get the stupid rpm package to open :-/ it keeps saying package not found curl >= 7.10.0 and i can not find it anywere can some one help?

Here is what I ended up doing (using Slackware)

I have a laptop with a very small HD hooked up to my router and my stereo. The music is actually housed on my other laptop (Mac)

Installed vnc on the Slackware laptop
mounted my music folder from the Mac laptop on the other
Created a few playlists in XMMS
VNC into the jukebox and change songs when I don't like what's playing at the moment

I chose VNC because it was just simpler than the other Remote Desktop stuff in Red Hat etc, plus I am using blackbox for a window manager to keep memory hogging down on the machine. There is a Red Hat rpm for VNC. http://www.realvnc.com/cgi-bin/3.3.7-vncform.cgi


Sorry that my machines/OSs/distros are all different from yours - but I think VNC is the way to go. Everything was set up and running in a matter of minutes with it.
