Mail Server on Linux
 

Hello All,
I have installed Redhat Linux Enterprise Edition 3.0 with Squid and Internet.
Now I want to configure "Mail Server" in this system such that users can send/recieve mail over the network.
Also I wish to Send & Recieve mail on windows system like using "Outlook Express".
Plese help me in detail.

Install packages called "postfix" and "dovecot" and configure them. Postfix is a mail transfer agent and dovecot is a IMAP and POP3 server.

Please give more information, do you need antispam and antivirus? Plus, is it mail server you want to make public available?

Please state all requirement because setup email server can become from a simple job to very-very complicated project.

Hopefully to try 1 light weight and 1 commercial use mail server.

Any recommendation? What's the most used mail server commercially?

I have 1 fix IP, and could use NO-IP.com to get a free domain name, that's all I need?

-procmail
-ldap(if you want)
-ssl
-cyrus sasl
-webmin
-bind dns server
-openwebmail/mailman or squirrelmail
-and etc.

Definitely, above item is required (or you can use another kind of package) thing to setup commercial mail server

i am new for linux and i would like to configure the mail server for my office. i have installed linux in my system, what are the packages to be installed for configuring the mail server and also i would like to know how to configure the domain in linux. shall we configure mail server without configuring my system in the domain.

Configuring a mail server for an office in Linux can be challenging. It took me about one year to be able to understand everything. Finally now I am able to install an Enterprise class Email system using Postfix, Cyrus-IMAP and Squirrelmail. However, this is not for the novice and it has a very steep learning curve. For home use it may be very simple but once you get a couple of hundred users hitting your server you really need to know what you are doing. But once you understand everything you will never want to implement any other email system, since it is so fast, efficient, scalable and cheap.

should i configure anything before installing,configuring qmail or sendmail.
also i dont have dedicated DNS server and Domain Server. i have decided to configure Domain server in windows. i would like to know how to add the linux machine in the domain.:confused:

You need to add an A record for the Linux box in your DNS config. Surely Windows has some nice GUI tool for adding various types of records to the domain? If you want to make the Linux machine route mail for the domain you must provide an MX (for Mail eXchange) record. If you want to make the Linux machine the primary mail server give it the lowest MX priority (sejnders will try the lowest numbered MX server, then the next lowest, etc.).
