mail server newbie

Hey guys I am trying to set up a r.h. 9.0 machine as a web server and a mail server. I will set up the web service through apache, but I have no clue how to start with the mail server. Could anyone recomend the most cost-effective and user friendly app. for me please. Thanx all.

What sort of server do you want?

pop or IMAP?

Either way I would use qmail for SMTP.

Like I said - qmail www.qmail.org is an SMTP server - it sends and receives e-mails from other servers.

In order for your clients to download messages to their clients (eg Mozilla or Outlook) you will need a server that stores messages. For IMAP I would use courier and for pop I would use qmail. There is a good howto here:
http://www.sxpress.com/~henry/qmail-...-web-howto.htm

At work we used the above instructions but we droped pop and for the web interface we used squirrel rather than imp:

Postfix has the same performance, etc and is much more easy to set up. You should consider trying Postfix as SMTP-server.

I second these notions! I also agree about SquirrelMail a very nice bit of kit that I use as my main mail client.

As for setting up qmail being a bit complex, I thought it was pretty easy going but I did end up read all the documentation a fair few times. So if you are in a hurry it might not be your best option.

cheers

Jamie...

I thought the qmail config looked a bit complicated too but a mixture of the defaults and a few changes using Webmin were all it needed.
