Lightbulb Mail Server

Hi,

I am trying to set up a mail server. I am using postfix on Slackware.

I installed it and configured it. When i want to test it, using

echo test | mail -s testsubject me@gmail.com

it tells me it couldn't find sendmail. I don't know why.

The ftp server, which i installed earlier, made trouble, because slackware doen't use PAM. I had to disable the shell in a ftp-config file. Maybe this is something similar.

I have no clue, how to configure my MX record.

My mail server is ms1.example.com

Could somebody explain setting up a mailserver like to a noob or show me a link to a page explaining this in detail.

Am i correct, that postfix doesn't support pop3 without addon or seperate server??

Thanks

You might want to consider a commercial offering the advantage being that they are usually much easier to setup and maintain.

I am using Gordano's mail server and have always found it very easy to administer since I am not a LINUX expert.

Gordano's website can be found at http://www.gordano.com.

If you are a total noob, may i advise you to do some studying before setting one up? Please do not read this as a RTFM flame, just a word of caution... Mailservers are pretty hard to secure, and a non secure mailserver is a really wanted item on the internet... Before you know it, you own a mailserver that is on the blacklist because some &%$& used it to spam the world...

Just a word of caution... (talking from own experience... )

Sure, I won't let the mailserve be used as an open mail proxy! I am not a complete noob, only a noob to linux, because i am just migrating to linux from M$ (I hate their license stuff -- too expensive, too many system resources are required, too instable, too expensive....)

What do you do if you can't get it to receive mail, but only to send mail?? might this be a problem that occurs because slackware doesn't support PAM? (this is why my ftp server made trouble earlier.)

I tried to RTFM, but it practically isn't readable. I know, I know, if you look for a setting, it is easily looked up in the "FM", but if you don't know what setting you are looking for, it puts you in an unfortunate position.

I just mentioned the noob thingie as warning, good to know that you aren't... And you are right the FM is indeed a bit heavy, if you do not know what you are looking for exactly...

But, im sorry i cant help you at this time. Dont know much bout postfix... I use sendmail....

You can set it up like this;
http://postfixwiki.org/index.php?tit...IMAP_and_MySQL
then administer it with postfix.admin
http://high5.net/postfixadmin/
