mail(mailx) to be nullclient?

I know the Outlook Express and Mozilla's MUA can set to use a remote SMTP Server, when I use mutt, I add esmtp to do so, so esmtp is a nullclient.

Now I want to know is there any way to set the command line tools mail(mailx) to do so?

thanks.
