Post Mac, Linux and Win File Shares over LAN

Our LAN is a Heinz57 of computers. Mac OSx, Win 98, Fedora 1, WinXP, Win 2003s, and a Mac 9.x all running off a mess of cables, a hub and a router.

I am hoping to setup file sharing between all of them at some point, but for now I would be happy to get file sharing working between the Mac OSx machine and the Linux Fedora 1.0 (Soon to be FC2). Both are connected directly to the main router.

The Windows machines and MAc machines all communicate fine. It's my Linux box that's being a pain. I know about firewall settings and login to other machines, where sharing is allowed, just fine.

The Mac OSx machine can login to the Linux FC1 box and transfer files (push and pull), but the collision light is constantly going crazy. From the Linux box I can log into the Mac Machine and access the file system (push and pull) - but I can't access a HD alias set to share on the Mac side.

Questions

1. How do I limit the collision alarms?

2. How do I access the HD alias on the Mac from the Linux box?

Have I provided enough information or do you need more? I have already searched teh Internet for help as well as these forums. Either I can't find what does exist to help me out, or it doesn't exist yet. I would be happy enough if someone could provide a URL or otherwise point me to an article that might help.

Thank you in advance,
-Strixy

Replace the hub with a switch. Plug everthing into the switch.

Pl. Interchange HUB with Switches.

The switch is Full duplex. it is nothing but . sending and receiving can be done at simultaniously.

Please check you NIC card also >100 mbps or more than also.

Ok. I can get a switch next weekend.

Any ideas on accessing a Mac 'alias' from a Linux machine?

Ok, so the Network is fine and casual sharing between the linux box and the Mac is good. I can upload/download from either machine, which is nice, but right now I have to download the files I want to work on from the remote machine - work on them - upload them again.

For example, to listen to a WAV file that we're re-mixing and editing (The audio file for the video we're editing) I have to download it and then listen to it.

Is there any way to sidestep this so I can listen to it without having to download it first? I know this can be done between two Windows machines. I'm pretty sure it can be done between a Panther and a Penguine.

I have tried using smbmount, but alas, I get to the part where you enter the file system type (I tried -t smbfs) and the terminal hangs. I tried (-t HFS+) and the kernel didn't know how to handle it.

Am I moving in the right direction?

I am also trying to figure out how to access a Mac hardrive alias via the network.

Thank you for the suggestion of swapping the hub for a switch.
