Looking for a reverse-router device, does it exist ?
 

Hi guys,

I am getting my internet from a neighbour via wifi. It works well on my laptop but I would like to funnel this to my WAN port behind my router so I may share this with connection with the rest of my computers.

I know there is a device out there that will pick up the signal that will make the router believe that it's connected to an internet modem but I heard it's pretty expensive.

What are my alternatives please?

Many routers can do this. For example, my Asus RT-AC68 has an operating mode called "Media bridge" in which it connects to an existing wifi network and then shares the connection on its LAN ports.

You'll have to check the documentation for your router to see if it has a similar mode available.

There are free alternate software for some models of routers to do this also.

You can also use your laptop to proxy the signal to lan.

They also make dedicated devices that don't really cost a lot for this task. The name of the mode on some models may be confusing too.

There are some wifi extenders and some powerline adapters that may do what you want also.

If your neighbor knows you are using his isp then it may be only a violation of his agreement with the isp. If he doesn't know you are using it, it may be illegal.
