looking for a network related project

I have programmed basic client server programs in C on Linux.
I am looking for some good programming project to work upon.
I tried going through three volumes of Richard Stevens many example programs and headers given in source code that comes with book does not compile or work on current Linux Systems.

you could write a dlna server with on the fly transcoding, there is a dlna library out there that could handle the dlna portion
