Logging into a Linux Server w/ Win2k

I'm in the process of replacing my NT 4.0 server with Mandrake Linux 7.0.

It's going very well, so far. I have Domain Logon, Samba, WINS, DHCP, Internet Connection Sharing, pmfirewall all going.

I have 2 nics, and a cable modem in the server.
I can successfully login, browse the network, surf the 'Net with Win98 and RH 6.2.

Before I trash my main workstation (Win2k), I wanted to check and see what issues (if any) there are with logging into a Linux Server using Win2k.

I would expect that I would have to "un-join" the existing NT Domain, by making the Win2k box a member of a Workgroup, and then join the Linux Domain.

Having tried that, I see the error message:
"Cannot log you in now because the <Name> Domain is not available."

I assume this means that Win2k cannot query the Linux box for the Domain Name...?

Any ideas?

What version of Samba?

I have also had problems with Win2k and Samba. I know that some versions of Samba can act as a domain controller for NT 4.0 and win 9x systems but not Win2k. Samba 2.2.0 was supposed to cover win2k but there it will not work if you have Win2k with SP2. check out Samba info for more info. Personally I haven't been able to get Samba to work at all even for my win98 system.

I'm going to try RH 6.2.
They have released Samba 2.2.1a, which reportedly corrects the problems you listed.

With MDK 7.0 I can enable logons from Win98.
Look at http://www.coastnet.com/~pramsey/linux/homenet.html
and http://bioserve.latrobe.edu.au/samba...pdc-howto.html
for the documentation I use.
