localhost.localdomain

Does it matter what I write for localhost.localdomain if the computer isn't a server?

What ramifications does this have? If the computers have different domain names can they not see each other, or something like that?

Thanks,

If your only going to use it as a desktop type system, don't worry about a domain name. localdomain will work just fine. If you have multiple workstations though, setting a hostname helps identify that workstation. A hostname can be anything you want to call that machine.

so if I have more than one computer on 1 router -> hostname identifies each. Does domain affect if they can see each other?

thanks for the response so far!

Not necessarily. I have 8 machines myself, each have a hostname, I put the corresponding hostname with IP in my /etc/hosts file so I don't have to type the IP to access each one but each machine is recognized by its hostname instead. It would get very confusing if each computer was named localhost..

But again, if you only have this one machine, it doesn't hurt to keep it like it is now.

the trick you did with the hosts file to "name" the computers, can that be done with the network gui that comes up with

neat

There's a tab in there with host name and alias. I'm not sure if Fedora has a different gui than Slackware or Solaris. If it's too complicated, what did you do to the hosts file?

Thanks,
