Question Local Admin Rights with Samba

Hi everyone,

Anyone know how to setup smb.conf so that when you login on a Windows client into the Domain, it gives you local admin rights to your windows machine?

I've got Samba setup so that the Linux samba server is the PDC. My windows machine connects no problem and lets me login to the domain. But I find that I cant install programs or change network settings, etc. because I dont have the correct permissions anymore.

You need to add the Samba domain account to the administrators group of the local machine. Here is the procedure on Windows 2000.

Right click on my computer and choose manage.

Choose local users and groups

Choose groups

Choose administrators

Choose add

The name of the workstation will appear. Change it to the name of the domain. It will ask you for a username and password for a user with admin rights on the domain. Use the format \\domain\user.

Choose the domain account that you want to have admin access on the local machine.

The procedure is the same for adding users to the admin group on a Windows domain.

PDC with Local admin on Samba

Thanks jamrock - I didnt know you could do it like that, but after hunting around I found some notes on another way to do it ... on Samba 3.0 there is a command called smbgroupedit which allows you to setup an domain admin accounts. If anyone else needs any help with this and cant get it to work using jamrocks method let me know.

Hi Jag...

I know this is a old message so I appologize...

I've tried adding the Samba user to the local admin account and I'm not able to log in and get admin rights like I would have thought I should.

Do you have a method you could sugest for me?
