Load balancing using a switch or linux box?

I have this problem on a busy local network sometimes one computer takes up all the bandwidth on a 1 gb switch and blocks everybody else out. I've read that "managed" switches can deal with this problem. Is that accurate? If so, can someone recommend a switch that will do that?

If a managed switch doesn't work, I was thinking about cobbling together a Linux box that would act as a load balancing router. Is that something that is feasible?

Thanks

Some smart switches may be possible. Linux and BSD's have some ways and prebuilt distro's and virtual machines for this task.

In almost all cases a dedicated switch would tend to be faster I'd think.
