Linux/windows shared connection question

After searching for similar questions, I found one that suggested that I could configure my linux machine to act as a router. I have a several questions about that.

1: How do I do that?

2: Can I use usb to connect the two instead of ethernet cable?

3: Will the processor speed and ram from my linux box affect the connection speed of my xp? (linux is on an ungodly old thing with only 64M ram and if I remember correctly, 566mhz processor.)

specs, Running windows xp home edition on Intel D845GVSR board, and Puppy hard drive install on some old compaq that ought to be buried, but we all need guinea pigs.

I haven't done it, but was looking into doing it. From what I gather, you need the following:

2 network interface card of some sort (1 for the LAN, 1 for the WAN)

THere is a software called Webmin that makes configuring your computer as the gateway simple. It's all graphical so you should look into that.

Hope this helps

Don't I need 3 cards? One for the connection from cable modem to Linux computer, and one on each machine for the cable between them?

You only have 2 computers, right?

Cable modem to Linux computer = 1st NIC card (gateway computer)
Gateway Computer connected to Node Computer #1 = 2nd NIC card (LAN)

If you have a Node computer #2 then yes, you would need a 3rd NIC card. Why not just buy a stinking router? LOL Soon you'll have 8 NIC cards
