Samba is the correct software to have installed to share files and printers with your windows boxes, however Samba does need to be configured.

Also to get your windows boxes to be able to share your internet you need to do some research on "IP masquarading"

If you are going to be using Linux as your server you shoulden't need to install any new software for your windows systems.

If you use the search feature on this site you can find a lot of information on both samba and IP Masquarading.
