Linux vs Linksys
So I have prospective client that needs some small office work done. They are on a Linsys WAP and not happy with it right now. The SRF is a brightport. This only has four ports on it. They have 1 linux Fedora machine that they use as file server, four windows machines and 2 printers. They want me to reconfigure the office so this is what I had in mind. Please let me know if this makes sense.
1) add a second nic card in the linux machine. Setup IP tables
Set up the fedora machine as the firewall, router, dhcp server. setup samba on it for the file and print sharing. Replace the Brigtport with a linksys switch. Keep current WAP so that they have wireless capabilities
2) They want access from home to the machines at the office so I thought this would be a good VPN solution. Purchase the Wireless G VPN broadband router. Setup the Linux server as the file and print server only and let linksys do the DHCP,firewall, switching and routing and VPN as well wireless.
Either way it seems like they are going to want to connect from home. Is this solution with Linksys a good one. I know that Linux would make a better firewall. not sure what to do. regardless they will need more ports for switching. If you have advice can you please help. Also tutorials on setting up 1).
Will there be driver issues with the printers, they are Xerox and laser jet 4550.
Thanks
