Remote Desktop i.e. Rdesktop is remote control. The user is a username on the machine to access and it must have a password.
Remote desktop is not available on Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic or Home Premium. I don't know what is available on Windows 8.
For remote assistance look at teamviewer.

I'll second teamviewer but in some cases it may be possible to use RDP. Generally only one side needs UPNP enabled in router to allow connection. Not sure you even need that in teamviewer. (I forget) Adobe's Connect used to go through port 80 and got past some stubborn firewalls.
