Linux to access Windows machine using?

Wanna use linux at work to connect to my home windows desktop. Which software do I use on each machine?

RealVNC? pcanywhere? tightvnc?

Tightvnc would probably be better as it i has better compression.

should just use tightvnc. Should work out fine. Just make sure the ports that vnc uses are open on your firewall or router (that is if you have one) I think it's 5800 and 5900 but I could be wrong?

So my windows machine use "tightvnc-1.2.9-setup.exe" and my linux box use "tightvnc-1.2.9-1.i386.rpm" ?

your windows machine should have tightvncserver running, and your linux machine at work should have tightvncviewer running

then how you connect to your windows machine is to type in your ip then a :1 the :1 stands for the number vncserver. e.g. if you had more than one running and you connected to another it'd be :2.

but yes that is correct. install the setup.exe onto your windows machine and then run the server. It should be auto-launched once you install it. All you need to do is set a password for the server.

then for the linux machine use

rpm -ivh tightvnc-1.2.9-1.1386.rpm

then yup just run the viewer and your set

type into terminal tightvncviewer
then enter the ip and a :1 for the windows home tightvnc server and your set

Tried using windows to connect to my machine.

Previously my friend use IE to connect to my tightvnc server at home, it works. But when I tried to access from my office, it failed after entering password. What could be the problem? Office firewall etc?

that is a very strong possability. Some firewall's namely ones at work or at school are not very great with allowing you to do much. They tend to just let through internet access and what other programs the company gives you. You could talk to your IT admin and see if anything could be worked out.
