Linux slower than Windows NT

I have been working with both Win 2K and Linux RH7 for 6 months or so, and found that sharing files using samba had caused only a few problems, but...

I had cause to build and test a Win NT machine and while connected to the network and running some tests, ie copying files from my Win 2K machine to the new Win NT machine, the performance was MUCH faster than when copying the same files from Win 2K to Linux RH7.

Any ideas or coments are appreciated!

Same hardware?

What kind of filesystems are in use?

How are the drives partitioned?

more info'

The hardware of the Linux and Win2K machines are comparable but the other NT machine is only a Pentium Pro 200, but as mentioned is much quicker when transfering files from the win2K machine.

Both Windows machines are NTFS, 1 partition.

I tried some file transfers again tonight, with the Windows pair working perfectly:( but when I tried the same transfer on the Linux machine, it failed 50% through.

The samba log files indicated a file seek error...

Hope this helps!

I'd run fsck on this drive. It looks like there is a problem with it. And maybe consider moving from ext2 to ext3 or ReisreFS.

I've seen similar performace issues when copying files from Win2k to a Slack8 samba machine.

I copied a tree with about 450 thousand files (about 15 Gigs) from a Win2k machine to the Slack 8 samba server. While copying it chews up 100% of the CPU and I stoped it after 10 hours. The same copy from Win2k to Win2k took about 4 hours. CPU usage on the 2k boxes during the copy close to idle.

The copy of the same dir tree is faster if I use the smbclient on the Linux box to copy the files from the Win2k machine and CPU usage is low.

file corruption also...

I've also noticed in the past that some files that have been copied have ended up being corrupted.

I just didn't want to have to keep another Windows machine running for this purpose only...
