Linux router configuration questions

Hello everybody

I have a small LAN to manage, 23 machines running various flavours of windows. Time ago I added to the LAN a linux box running slackware to provide internal mail and web services. Also I'm using Samba on the linux box to work it as a file server for the windows clients. No authentication anyway, just shared folders. Now we're about to go broadband, and we need a little more control on the traffic and navigation. Present day all the machines on the LAN are connected to a hub, which is also connected to our exit router. The structure is very simple, as you can see. Now I wish to reconfigure the whole thing to fit the new needs. I'm asking the networking experts here if what I have in mind can be done: I want to use the linux box as a gateway to the router. I want to do something like this:

( LAN ) -> (Linux router) -> (Gateway router) -> ISP -> Internet

The linux router should provide authentication, since we want to be able to block the navigation of some users. The machines on the LAN have to remain windows clients, sadly. To make a long story short, the only box that should be able to access the ISP via the gateway should be the linux box. Now I'm asking:

1) Can this be done?
2) Can some networking expert please tell me how to set up things in a tidy way? I think I have to switch on IP masquerading on the linux box, make all the windows clients point to it as a gateway, and set the exit route of the linux box to the gateway router's IP. Am I correct?
3) Since all my clients are running windows, can Samba handle the authentication so that we can switch on and off the navigation on certain users?

Thanks in advance and thanks for reading all this. I tried to be as complete as possible.

Hi there,
I think you have the answer and if you want to go for it we can go further

this is my opinion, no need to apply it

1 - you can set up the linux box, it up as a router/gateway
2- use nat/iptable

- then you will configure samba for authentication

- Hopefully , this is usefull to you

Thanks for the info, Tachou

How can I do that? I'm not very into windows net configuration, so I can only guess. Maybe I must set-up a domain and have the box running Samba be the domain controller?

Thanks again,

Thanks for the kind answer.

No, it's a slackware machine, connected with an isdn (dsl in a while) router

Yes that's the idea. I'm deep into Samba howto's now to choose the right method.

Yes it would be nice to. We need to provide different services to different users.
