Linux + Opera/Konq = CRASHED router (under stress)
Hi (NOTE, if you don't want to read my tests, just read the first and last paragraph)
I have a dynalink RTA1320 router.
I find that it crashes when lots of things are downloading at once.
e.g If I open 6+ pages on a forum with avatars that has 50 messages per page.
There is a catch though, it only happens with opera and konqueror under linux. Specifically, I have experienced this in Debian Sid, Ubuntu and Mandriva.
TESTS:
I have a forum which crashes the router quite reliably!
That is, neogaf.com.
Now, I tested firefox, opera and konqueror by opening several pages on that forum. As I said, opera and konqueror crashed it, however, firefox just opened them without crashing the router!
I did the ame test on a different pc with windows on it using opera and mozilla. Neither of them crashed the router.
So, are there any settings related to networking in linux that might alleviate this problem?
I noticed in windows that opera seemed to sort of stall for a while after it had opened several pages (this is the point I expected the router to crash, but it didn't)
Maybe I can help you take a small bite out of this problem (or not). Opera has settings
(pref -> advanced -> network) for the max allowed connections to a server and max total connections. Would maybe reducing these settings help? If so, it might give you a clue for Konqueror.
As far as setttings in the OS itself are concerned, the only thing I could think of was some sort of throttling, which is beyond my knowledge.
Hi blackhole, thanks for your suggestion. I've tried changing that setting in opera and after a few days it seems it helps.
However, it still crashes often.
The problem is that my mom likes to click these manual surf sites, she usually has about 10-20 open, and that sometimes crashes the router.
So hopefully someone who has a good knowledge of linux networking can suggest something else.
If anyone is wondering, I managed to stop the crashing.
The first step was disabling IPV6. This step prevented the router from crashing when loading a page full of pictures form certain hosts (like myspace and image avenue).
It was still crashing with the neogaf forum though.
So I went and added these to /etc/sysctl.conf
I got them from an old installation which I had customised.
I don't know which exactly did it, but it seems to have stopped crashing under normal use now.
