Linux on home dsl

Have a Win98 laptop connected to dsl -- working great. Want to have RH 8.0 laptop use dsl modem using dhcp -- keep getting 'Unable to obtain IP address' msg. Take RH 8.0 box into office, works great (no config chg'ed). Have heard I may need a 4 port switch to resolve dhcp client/server issue (?). Ideas?
